In this two day workshop geared toward beginners, the students will explore

colors. They will first learn to apply this palette of colors in the painting
of simple still life motifs under dramatic light, designed to excite the
use of bold colors to create form. They will then shift to painting still
life arrangements in natural light, requiring a more subdued range of
colors. Lee will demonstrate frequently and give individual instruction
to insure success. Group critiques each day. Register through Maryland

Color Basics in Watercolor

Glade Clubhouse

Thursday-Saturday, April 8-10, 2010
9:am-4pm
Cost: $250 for 3 days or $90/day
Learn to paint fresh, light-filled watercolors! Co-author of Painting
the Impressionist Watercolor, Lee is an authority on the Impressionist
theories of color and light and how they apply to the watercolor medium.
In his workshops he teaches his students to use the palette of colors
developed by Claude Monet and the early French Impressionists in the late
19th century. The Impressionists used a palette of colors that corresponded
to the natural spectrum of light. They understood the color relationships
which allow the painter to capture the changing effects of light from
hour to hour during the day and season to season through the course of
the year. In this intensive three-day workshop, Lee will teach his students
to see the variations in value and color, and how to capture the delicate
subtleties of light in watercolor. They will first learn to apply this
palette of colors in the painting of simple still life motifs as an introduction
to the Impressionist theories of color and light, and then move toward
more complicated arrangements to help establish the information. This
workshop will give the students a good grounding in the “Impressionist
language of color,” which can be applied to landscape painting as
well. Lee will also cover principles of composition and design that will
help strengthen the students’ work.

Student testimonial:
Thank you for an excellent workshop! It was so much more than I expected.
I had a fantastic time. I really enjoyed how you managed each student
with individual care, but could move everyone as a whole as well. So often
students become lost in frustration, but you kept us all focused and enthusiastic.
